"La Cité de Carcassonne est avant tout connue comme une ville médiévale fortifiée ; mais cet éperon rocheux est occupé par l'homme depuis le VIème siècle avant JC, sous la forme d'abord d'un habitat gaulois, puis d'une ville romaine dotée de remparts dès les III - IVème siècle de notre ère.

Sur la face ouest de cette fortification primitive prend appui le château construit au XIIème siècle par les vicomtes Trencavel. Au début du XIIIème siècle, Carcassonne est prise par Simon de Montfort lors de la croisade albigeoise, puis annexée au domaine royal. Les travaux de fortification se poursuivent tout au long du XIIIème siècle avec la construction de l'enceinte extérieure et la modernisation du rempart intérieur, faisant de cette place une forteresse imprenable.

Elle perd son importance stratégique après la signature du traité des Pyrénées en 1659. Dans la seconde moitié du XIX siècle, elle fait l'objet d'un immense chantier de restauration sous la conduite d'Eugène Viollet-le-Duc et est désormais inscrite par l'UNESCO sur la liste du patrimoine de l'Humanité."

"The estate of Carcassonne is above all known as a strengthened medieval city; but this rocky spur is occupied by the man for the VIth century before JC, under the shape at first of a Gallic housing environment, then a Roman city endowed with ramparts from IIIth - IVth century AD.

On the West side of this primitive fortification takes support the castle built in the XIIth century by viscounts Trencavel. At the beginning of the XIIIth century, Carcassonne is taken by Simon de Montfort during the Albi crusade, then annexed to the royal domain. The works of fortification continue throughout the XIIIth century with the construction of the outside surrounding wall and the modernization of the internal rampart, making of this place an impregnable fortress.

It loses its strategic importance after the signature of the treaty of Pyrenees in 1659. In the second half of the XIXth century, it is the object of an immense construction site of restoration under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and is from now on registered by the UNESCO on the list of the world heritage."
